Richard Hanly Obituary (2021) – Virginia Beach, Virginia


Richard McCallister Hanly, 77, of Virginia Beach, Va., Died on November 3, 2021.

Born in Charleston, West Virginia, he was the only child of the late Miller M. Hanly and Eulalia (Quick) Hanly. Graduated from Charleston High School in 1962, he attended West Virginia State College before joining the United States Navy in 1964. He served honorably for 22 years with a period of service during the Vietnam War. He retired as Chief Boatswain’s Mate and served as a captain of small craft on Navy tugs for much of his career. Richard was a very proud Navy veteran.

Richard was a Master Mason member of Kempsville Masonic Lodge 196 AF & AM in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was also a Shriner and was a member of the Sudan Shrine Temple in New Bern, North Carolina. Richard was a member of the Eastern Officials Association where he enjoyed being a youth baseball umpire for many years.

His memory remains to be cherished, his wife of over 56 years, Beverly Hanly; son Scott Hanly; her daughter Erin Updegraff and her husband Jason; grandchildren Jared (21), Curtis (17), Avery (15), Kelsy (14), Mason (12) and many friends.

A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Reformed Church, 3488 Godwin Boulevard, Suffolk, Virginia 23434 on Monday, November 29 at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Veterans Cemetery under the direction of Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. Condolences can be presented to the family at:
